Profile
Australian mezzo-soprano Charlotte Merz made her Sydney Opera House debut in 2015 as a featured soloist in Bernstein’s Mass. She has since performed widely across Australia and the United States, appearing with the Sydney Philharmonia, Penrith Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Collegium Musicum Choir and Orchestra, and in numerous operatic productions. Her repertoire spans Bernstein, Mozart, Britten, and Rossini, showcasing her versatility on both concert and opera stages.
Charlotte was selected for multiple internationally recognised young artist programs, including the Sarasota Opera in the United States, Bel Canto Tuscany in Italy, Chautauqua Opera in the United States, and Sydney Pacific Opera. Her operatic roles include Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Miss Jessel in The Turn of the Screw, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito, Angelina in La Cenerentola, and Mercedes in Carmen. Through her refined vocal technique and compelling stage presence, she has earned acclaim from audiences across multiple countries.
In addition to her performing career, Charlotte is also an experienced educator. She has served as a teaching assistant at Columbia University and as a vocal ensemble instructor at the Manhattan School of Music, where she designed and taught courses in vocal performance and music history. Her students have gone on to study at institutions including New York University, Columbia University, Vassar College, and UCLA.
Charlotte has received numerous prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Helpmann Family Fellowship, the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust scholarship, and prizes from the Sydney Eisteddfod. She was also appointed as a Doctoral Fellow at the Manhattan School of Music’s Center for Career Readiness and Community Impact.
